Project READ trains volunteer tutors to teach adults in our community how to read, perform math, or speak and read English. Our goal is to have trained tutors available in each community of District 505! A tutor might be a homemaker, a retiree from any profession, a college student, a working professional, a former adult learner. Many individuals find their lives to be enriched by their experiences with our Project READ learners. To become a tutor, you must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or GED. Tutors complete a mandatory 14 hours of training (a combination of online modules from the Secretary of State’s Office and 2 short in-person sessions). Tutors receive ongoing support, resources, plus opportunities to attend workshops for further training. Tutors may meet with learners at a drop-in site, in an Adult Ed classroom, in public places such as libraries, churches, book stores, etc. We are funded by a grant from the Illinois State Library, a division of the Illinois Secretary of State's office. All services, materials, and resources are free for use by both learners and tutors.
