Project READ trains volunteer tutors to teach adult learners how to read, perform math, or speak and read English. Our learners are interviewed and assessed and must not exceed an eighth grade level. Tutors receive mandatory twelve hours of training, ongoing support, plus opportunities to attend workshops for further training. Tutors might choose to work one-on-one or in a classroom setting throughout the Parkland College 505 district. Morning, afternoon, and evening classes are most often held M-Th at Parkland, at Urbana Adult Education, in Rantoul, or at various other sites throughout the district as needed. One-to-one tutoring pairs meet only in public places such as libraries, churches, book stores, etc. We are funded by a grant from the Illinois State Library, a division of the Illinois Secretary of State's office. All services, materials, and resources are free for use by both learners and tutors.
